Ecocide broadly refers to severe and widespread or long-term damage to the environment.

Currently, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) lists four crimes:

  • Genocide
  • Crimes Against Humanity
  • War Crimes
  • Crimes of Aggression

Activists are calling for ecocide to be listed as a fifth crime under the Rome Statute.

These countries have publicly declared support for exploring the inclusion of Ecocide Law at the international level: Finland, Canada, Spain, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Vanuatu, Maldives.

At the UN Ocean Conference this week, Kenya also announced that they have submitted to Parliament a landmark legislation that will make ecocide an offence nationally.
